Allergies in Pets Are More Common Than Most Owners Realize
Environmental allergies affect a significant percentage of dogs and cats, and the pattern of symptoms is different enough from what we expect (runny nose, sneezing) that many owners don't connect their pet's scratching to seasonal changes. Understanding how environmental allergies present in animals — and what options exist for management — makes a major difference in quality of life for affected pets.
How Environmental Allergies Differ from Human Allergies
In humans, environmental allergens primarily cause respiratory symptoms: runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing. In dogs and cats, the predominant target organ is the skin. Environmental allergies in pets typically present as itching, particularly affecting the paws (dogs chew them obsessively), the ears (recurring ear infections are a classic allergy symptom), the belly and groin, the armpits, and the face. Skin redness, hair loss from rubbing and chewing, and recurring skin or ear infections are all hallmarks of atopic dermatitis (the clinical term for environmental allergic skin disease).
Common Environmental Allergens
Pollen: Tree pollens (spring), grass pollens (summer), and weed pollens (late summer/fall) are major seasonal triggers. Symptoms that appear at predictable seasons and resolve between them strongly suggest pollen allergy.
Mold: Indoor and outdoor mold spores peak in damp conditions — late spring, after rain, and in damp indoor environments. Pets allergic to mold may be worse in humid seasons and in certain rooms of the house.
Dust mites: Unlike pollen and mold, dust mites are present year-round, peaking in humid seasons. Pets allergic to dust mites tend to itch constantly rather than seasonally.
Storage mites: These mites live in dry dog food and can be a source of allergen exposure via the food bowl — an easily overlooked trigger in atopic dogs.
Diagnosis
Diagnosing environmental allergies starts with ruling out other causes of itching: food allergy, parasites (especially fleas — even a single flea bite triggers intense itching in flea-allergic animals), and skin infections. Allergy testing — intradermal skin testing or serology (blood testing) — can identify specific allergens, which is particularly valuable if allergen-specific immunotherapy is being considered.
Treatment Options
Allergen-specific immunotherapy (allergy shots or drops): The only treatment that addresses the underlying immune response rather than suppressing symptoms. Custom-formulated based on your pet's specific allergen profile, given as injections or oral drops over months to years. About 60-70% of dogs show significant improvement. Takes 6-12 months to see full effect.
Cytopoint (lokivetmab): A monthly injection that neutralizes a specific itch-signaling protein (IL-31). Effective in many dogs, with effects lasting 4-8 weeks per injection. No systemic immunosuppression.
Apoquel (oclacitinib): A daily oral tablet that targets the JAK-STAT pathway involved in allergic itch. Fast-acting (within hours) and effective. Requires monitoring with long-term use.
Regular bathing: Weekly baths with a mild or medicated shampoo remove allergens from the coat and skin surface. Some dogs show significant reduction in symptoms with bathing alone during high-allergen seasons.
Managing the Environment
Reducing allergen load helps: wash pet bedding weekly in hot water, use HEPA air purifiers, wipe paws after outdoor exposure during high pollen periods, and consider dust mite covers for pet beds if dust mites are a known trigger. Environmental control won't eliminate symptoms in heavily sensitized animals but can reduce the total allergen burden enough to make a meaningful difference.
